Lucy hadn’t enjoyed a Christmas this much since her mom had been alive. It made her realize how much she’d shut herself away from everything. Tony’s illness had sapped her energy and then his confession about not being her biological father had been the last straw. When she and Trey got back to her house, she didn’t want to say goodnight. It seemed silly to, anyway.

Her house was the only one on the block without lights on it. It looked like a dark spot on the street. She wondered if she should have hired that company that had come through the neighborhood to do her lights. But at the time she hadn’t wanted anything to do with the holiday.

“Looks like the Grinch lives here,” Trey said as he turned off his truck.

“It does, doesn’t it?” She thought of the light-up manger and all the boxes of lights she’d brought with her from San Francisco that were sitting in her garage because she hadn’t been able to face putting them out.

“Want to come in?”

“I do,” he said. “I’d like to stay the night, too.”

“Being bold?”

“I’ve never heard of a guy who won a girl otherwise,” he said.

“Do you want to win me?” she asked.

“I’m thinking about it.”

Well there you go, she thought. Though that really didn’t answer anything. Had she been pushing too hard? It was a fair enough question to the playful teasing. But she could see where it took them into some foreign territory.

He got out of the truck and she opened her own door and thought of friend Lenora and the etiquette advice she’d given her as she brought her knees together and then contemplated hopping out of the truck. But once again, Trey was there. Hands on her waist as he lifted out of the truck and set her carefully on the sidewalk.

“I’m sorry. Didn’t mean anything like that. I’m not sure what I want, Lucy,” he admitted. “You’ve taken me by surprise. I didn’t expect you.”

She swallowed against the truth that was aching to come out. She hadn’t expected him, either, but she’d asked because already she was falling for him. She didn’t want to. Caring for a guy who’d promised her he’d be around until New Year’s didn’t sound smart. But she couldn’t control what she felt.

“I guess you didn’t expect me, either,” he said at last.

“No, I didn’t. Listen, you can come in or not, but at least be honest with me,” she said.

“I thought I had been,” he answered quietly.

“Me, too. But your actions are saying something more serious. The shoes, thinking of home, asking me about my parents…all of that isn’t something casual. Not to me, anyway.”

She walked away toward her front door. Trey was a smart man who’d travelled a lot, so she wasn’t falling for any aw shucks, ma’am behavior from him.

She unlocked her door. She heard the doors of the cab of his truck open again. Christmas just wasn’t her time of year, she thought. It sort of felt unfair that a winter storm had sent her to him and then he was lost to her a day later.
